As the successor organization to the former Ministry of Light Industry, UzTekstilProm currently has around 1,800 member companies from the cotton industry in all processing stages: cotton cultivation, spinning mills, weaving mills and garment factories. Besides the accounting office, which manages the membership fees, there is no organised and structured overview of the individual companies. There is thus currently no central platform within the organization that provides an overview of its members and their businesses. Such a database is needed in order to enhance the accessibility of information on potential suppliers from Uzbekistan, otherwise, it is impossible to centrally inquire, for instance, which company in a certain area manufactures and offers which goods or holds which sustainability certificates or audits. This means that local producers cannot find new buyers and buyers cannot find new suppliers. This problem is particularly relevant in international trade, as neither side normally has access to informal networks in which they could otherwise get the information and contacts they want. GIZ therefore supports the creation of an internet-based electronic database for collecting and assessing the names, contact details and more information of the member companies of UzTekstilProm, e.g. on sustainable production practices and certificates.
